| Breast cancer is a very regular type of cancer and one of the main causes for death among women. Until now mammography is the prevalent diagnostic tool for the disease. Nevertheless, mammographic imaging specific needs as well as the need for prompt diagnosis determine digital processing methods (i.e. CAD – Computer Aided Diagnosis system), as being absolutely necessary when applied on all produced mammographies. Systema Technologies developed a software processing product for mammography images in collaboration with the National Academy of Athens – Informatics Science Research Department. The product has been designed aiming at being user friendly to the medical practitioners–users, thus clarifying and enhancing images of the areas of interest in order to detect breast micro-calcifications and to classify results based on diagnostic value and risk. It must be stressed that there is significant difficulty in identifying micro-calcifications at an early stage, mainly due to the size and special character of mammography images. HIPPOCRATES© turns into an extremely useful tool in the “hands of” special medical experts on breast cancer, enabling the possibility of having an early and valid breast cancer diagnosis at large scale. HIPPOCRATES© is being deployed under the auspices of the National Academy of Athens at specific Hospital departments, hence being thoroughly and accurately evaluated. | |
